Any other fans of One Piece here? I started it a little while ago, and like it, but took a break at about episode 22 while BK was here. Now that I've started watching again, I've gotten to episode 37, and now realize Nami (the girl in that new image in my signature) is my new favorite anime character (which means a lot because she had to contend with Alita from Battle Angel Alita, and I'm a huge Alita fan).

I just spent an hour or two scouring the net for Nami backgrounds, and came away rather disappointed (the only BGs with her in it were group shots, and while the other main characters are also easily among my favorite anime characters, I just want Nami happy.gif), and so quickly made my own to calm the pain. tongue.gif Google image search wasn't of much help, and instead promptly threw some hentai my way, which I'd rather not use as a background on the computer in the main downstairs room. The usually great Anime Wallpapers has forsaken me, and only offered a hideous picture of Luffy with a six pack. pinch.gif They're corrupting such a cool character! mad.gif I'll probably make a few myself as soon as I can track down some high res pics.

Hm, that reminds me, I should put the Alita background I made on Anime Wallpapers...

Edit: Wow! They've gotten some awesome Battle Angel Alita backgrounds since I last checked there!

Well its safe to say you've found an anime I've never heard of. I'm guessing it hasn't come states side yet?

I wouldn't be surprised if it never does come to the states. The episodes are already in the two-hundreds, the manga's much further, and there's been five movies, and no one's gotten the rights yet. It's also got a few oddities about it that would make it harder than usual to market to a western audience, most notably the unusual style. The art style looks like it's very old or something, although it is new (and they even use a few computer effects here and there to good effect). It also has some really strange characters (seriously, some of them are just... um... I think "wtf" would be the best adjective tongue.gif but they're great too) which would make most instantly peg it as a bizarre kid's anime, but at the same time they have plenty of blood and death when they get in serious battles, and some damn evil villains. These things will probably be a major impedement everywhere but among serious anime fans. But who knows, maybe I'm wrong. If it ever comes to America I'll buy the whole series, but until then I'm enjoying it plenty in Japanese.

But that'd be fine with me anyway, since the acting is fantastic, and the subbing group doing the work matches.

You should come over and watch sometime, it's awesome. smile.gif

I must admit, I have never heard of this -- is there any reason that a (very) casual anime fan should check it out?

I would suggest reading the manga as opposed to watching the anime. The anime, like all anime of ongoing manga, does still have filler sometimes (Albeit, not as bad as Naruto) and it's frustrating when it happens, cuz you always get filler after really good arcs where you're like "omg, something's happened! What's going to happen in the next arc?" and then you get long filler sleep.gif I'm reading the manga, as is Rinnon. He switched from anime to manga cuz he didn't want to wait for the episodes XD

I stopped watching for 2 years so the episodes would pile up and I wouldn't have to wait every week.

I am reading the Manga weekly, instead of watching the Anime weekly. I HAD been watching the anime weekly, for like the last 5 years though. The only reason I jumped to the Manga, was that I was tired of waiting a week to find out what was going to happen next... eventually I broke down and read everything that was out. I'm not watching the series right now, because it's all stuff I've already seen. But I still recomend it.

Rory: It's an enjoyable series. There aren't really any deep themes or anything, but it's consistently entertaining to watch. If I could only recomend one anime, it wouldn't be this, but if you are looking for a good weekly ongoing anime to watch, this is the best one. (The other two main contenders for this "ongoing" series being things like Bleach and Naruto, and One Piece is better than both)

PS: Bill - The part you're coming up to in the anime is BAD-ASS. Oh man, this has been the best arc, period.

Actually the episodes are 23 minutes a piece and if cut out the intro, the recap, the sneak peek, and the ending that shaves about 6.5 minutes off right there. That is of course if your not in the middle of a huge arc then the recap can use up 6 minutes by its self. No anime with this many episodes is immune from the 5 episode fight that could have easily been put in to one episode.

104 episodes about 30 hours of anime. When you don't have a job 4 hours of anime a day is nothing.

You won't run into the problem as fast cuz you'll still have to catch up with the manga, which is ahead of the anime. You'll still get more One Piece.

That would be a lot of reading... I might lose interest reading a manga of an anime of which I have seen 440 episodes.

yup when you realize that a good 90% of it is the same thing over and over again just with different character names. Yeah, the passion fades.

I don't understand this statement. Are you saying after a while you lose passion for anime altogether, or are you saying that you will lose the passion for a specific anime, IF you read all the manga?

And Mike, not all of it is the same thing just with different characters. Not any more than every action movie is the same thing with different names. Sure, there are TONS of anime that are cookie cutter, but that doesn't mean it's all like that.

The common things in anime are just more obvious because most people who watch anime didn't grow up watching it their whole lives, whereas, we did grow up watching english TV shows and movies that are cookie cutter.
